"But while he was still a long way off,

This is a celebration song.
It’s the kind of song you could imagine the prodigal son singing with his family, hoping his older brother would join him at his Father’s celebration.
We can sing like this if our confidence rests in the Father’s love.
If our confidence is in ourselves and what we have done,
then like the older brother we might find ourselves outside the party.
