about

Psalm 27 is one of the many Psalms of Lament.
In each case the Psalmist looks at his own situation,
which gives him any number of reasons to fear.
He then applies what he knows of God’s faithfulness to his present circumstances.
By the end of each Psalm the situation may not have changed,
but the Psalmists attitude to that situation has been transformed.
If God is the source of true security then being with him is the safest place to be, and so that is David’s prayer in Psalm 27.
David’s confidence in the face of seeming forsakenness
then becomes the confidence of the people of God
as they sing this Psalm together in the temple courts.
And it becomes Jesus’ confidence when he is forsaken on the cross,
and yet is not abandoned by his Father to the grave.
Because Jesus was forsaken
it now becomes our all-surpassing confidence.
We will see the goodness of the Lord.
We can wait for the Lord.
We can be strong and take heart.
And wait.

lyrics

Lord, you will lead me
You have been my home
Safe in your hiding place
Here before your throne

Write this song upon my heart
Words that calm my fears
You will be my rock
Love that perseveres

You will lift up my eyes
So I can see your face
And when all hope’s forsaken
I will see your grace
See your grace

When trouble floods me
Held by slender cords
Hell’s pressing doubt and fear
Veils your saving Word

There’s one thing I still long for
Let me rest assured
When I am singing
‘You are good my Lord’

Wait, wait on the Lord
Be strong and take heart
Wait on the Lord

You will lift up my eyes
So I can see your face
On that cross there forsaken
Jesus, I see grace

On that cross there forsaken
Jesus, I see grace
See your grace
