"You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, a people belonging to God,
that you may declare the praises of him
who called you out of darkness
into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9)

We sometimes assume the gospel is for the respectable,
the decent, the well-balanced and spiritually healthy.
Yet at the very start of his ministry, in Luke 4,
Jesus takes his gospel manifesto from Isaiah 61.
He comes to “bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners.”
He comes not to call the righteous, but the sinners.
He comes for those who know their sin,
and who know the impossibility of escape.
He comes for those who know their predicament
and he will take away the ashes of grief
and exchange it for a crown of beauty
He will turn our tears into praise for the one who saves (Isaiah 61:3)
The victory of grace gives sinners a brand new identity.
‘Once called sinners, now are saints’.
